Nobody Wants to Read Your S*&@

In a quest to become a better writer, I've read many books about writing. If you're going to read just one, I recommend: Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t (asterisk his), Steven Pressfield.
If you don't aspire to write a book, Pressfield contends that you should follow his principles even if it's just to give a talk to the Local Garden Club.
His work is very entertaining, and succinctly sums up many of the more serious tones on this subject
