Do we have inflation?

The other day my wife and I went to Torrington to buy horse supplies at the feed store. Right down the street was Carvel, so we stopped for an ice cream. Both of us ordered a small vanilla cone, that's it. I had a ten dollar bill in my hand and absentmindedly handed it to the person at the counter. She said "Sir--it's $12" Twelve dollars to two little ice cream cones! I looked the the guy in front of me who had ordered two large and one small milk shakes. 27 bucks! Am I wrong to be a bit surprised? 
BTW -This was Torrington, CT, not Martha's Vineyard.
